On Sunday, February 23, 2025, Rotarians and non-Rotarians will come together to celebrate World Peace and Understanding Day, a global observance dedicated to fostering unity, cooperation, and mutual respect among nations and cultures as well as 120 years of Rotary.
This annual event, rooted in the principles of peacebuilding and cross-cultural dialogue, provides an opportunity for individuals, organizations, and governments to reaffirm their commitment to nonviolence, diplomacy, and humanitarian efforts.
The 2-in-1 event will hold at NECA House, in Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos. Among the special guests being expected are Dr. Oluwole Olujide Kukoyi, District Governor, Rotary International, D9111; His Lordship, Dr. Matthew Hassan Kukah, Catholic Bishop of Sokoto; Prince Julius Adelusi-Adeluyi, Former Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria; and the Lagos Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
Equally being expected are Christian and Islamic leaders; and Captains of industries and the academia.
Speaking of the event, the chairman of the organizing committee, PAG Raf Abanum stated that "nothing happens without peace." Adding that Rotary, a global organization, of men and women, devoid of ethnic, political and religious biases, attaches so much importance to peace and as such ensures that the day is marked specially every year.
World Peace and Understanding Day, of course, serves as a reminder that peace is not just the absence of war, but a continuous effort requiring dialogue, education, and empathy.
“As we celebrate World Peace and Understanding Day, we must recognize that peace begins with each of us,” said PAG Abanum. “Through education, dialogue, and action, we can create a world where understanding triumphs over division.”
Individuals, both Rotarians and non Rotarians, as well as communities and clubs, can participate by either attending or engaging in social media discussions using #RD9111WorldPeaceDay2025, or even initiating peace-building activities in their own communities.
