Rotary Club of Lagos Palm Grove Estate is offering free eye surgeries for eye cataract patients at the Indo Eye Care Foundation Hospital on Airport Road, Lagos state.
The Club President, Rtn Omoye Evbota while narrating the history of the foundation during the visit of the pioneer District Governor to the club, revealed that the collaboration between the club and the foundation dates back to over 14 years ago.
“The birth of the Indo Eye Care Hospital started with the Late Rtn. AKS Naranbhai Patel MFR, Rtn. Deep Mirani and Industrialist / Philanthropist - Mr. A.K. Mirchandani - Chairman-Sona Group together conceived the idea of Indo Eye Care Foundation to provide free Cataract surgeries to the underprivileged members of our host community.
“They joined hands with Rotary Club of Lagos Palm Grove Estate and have been jointly conducting free eye surgery camps in Lagos for over 14 years.
Over the years, Rotary Club of Lagos Palm Grove Estate in collaboration with the foundation has conducted 10 camps and performed about 25000 free eye surgeries in Nigeria, mainly at Marina General Hospital.
This Rotary year, the club set a target to achieve 800 free surgeries in a space of 10 days at 80 surgeries per day and at the last count on 4th of December,667 surgeries have been completed.
The District Governor in his remarks, recounted the collaboration between the Association of Nigeria Physicians in the Americas (ANPA) and the foundation during the medical mission in Ota in 2023, describing it as the beginning of a beautiful collaboration. He stated that the ANPA team were very impressed with the part the foundation played which made them specifically request for another medical collaboration which will take place in 2025.
The DG who was led on a facility tour around the foundation hospital commended the Rotary club for such a world record of opening 800 eye cataract surgeries in a few days.
The Consular General of India, Shri Chandramouli Kern who was also present to meet with the DG and the foundation, in his remarks, thanked the Rotary club and the foundation for making the free surgeries a success.
“This is happening due to the charitable gesture that brings everybody together”, he said while appreciating the foundation for maintaining a good relationship with the supporters who keep bringing the needed support to carry out the surgeries.“Thank you all for coming together to make this possible”, he added.
